While some may celebrate or commiserate over Singles Awareness Day, there is another kind of “Single Awareness” that could be impacting your organization, and you might even be unaware of it —the Single Audit.
What is a Single Audit?
A Single Audit is a specialized compliance audit required when a non-federal entity spends more than $1 million in federal funds during a fiscal year. This threshold is established under Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200). Organizations that meet this threshold must undergo a Single Audit to evaluate both their financial statements and compliance with federal program requirements.
If your organization receives federal or pass-through state funds, you may be subject to Single Audit requirements — even if you are a for-profit entity.
What Makes a Single Audit Different?
Unlike a standard financial statement audit, a Single Audit includes detailed testing of compliance with federal grant requirements. Auditors must determine whether the entity has complied with direct and material compliance requirements for each major federal program.
The audit also evaluates internal controls over compliance. Federal agencies use the audit results to monitor compliance and identify risks, deficiencies, and areas that may require corrective action.
Who Needs a Single Audit?
You may need a Single Audit if:
Your organization expends more than $1 million in federal awards in a fiscal year
You receive federal grants directly or through a pass-through entity
Your funding agreement references Uniform Guidance compliance requirements
Organizations that do not meet the threshold may still be subject to other federal reporting requirements.
Expertise Behind a Single Audit
Single Audits require specialized training and additional continuing professional education. CPA firms performing Single Audits must meet government auditing standards and independence requirements.
For over 30 years, Berman Hopkins has supported organizations in meeting Single Audit compliance obligations and navigating complex federal grant regulations.
